In a mass media marketplace, we could only ever HUNT for customers. We spend lots of sales & promotion dollars, hunt for prospects and HOPE they remember us when it comes time to buy. Not a terribly efficient system, but with a handful of people controlling the media (access to the prospect) we had little choice. The non-media solutions had their share of costs as well. Direct mail requires creative, production, printing and mailing as well as systems and processes for follow up.
